Kinja'd!!!

This evening could have gone better. Dumped the motorcycle in a parking lot. Net result is a broken collar bone, and an even more battered bike.

I was driving through a mostly empty Home Depot parking lot. I was leaning the bike way over being silly since it was the first time out this year. Best I can piece together I road up higher on the tread of the brand-new tires where it was still greasy and not worn in at all(first time out on the tires) and the rear tire kicked out. I lowsided the bike and took the brunt of the impact on my shoulder, then skidded for a bit. Proper gear meant no head impact and I scraped the shoulder of my jacket and not my actual shoulder.

So I am in a sling for 3-4 weeks and the bike needs a new mirror, shift lever & bar end, as well as having picked up yet more scratches.

smooth. I’ve dont that. but no inguries. that my friend is called a lowside.

lesson learned? SLOWLY wear in the tire.

The sad part is I was going at normal parking lot speeds, I just managed to outrun my skill in that moment.

Bummer! But, it is hard to ride motorcycles for too long without joining the collarbone club.

Ouch! I know those feels, the only bone I’ve even broken was my left collar bone, back when I was a kid.

Dont like to add insult to injury, buy My guess is chopping off the throttle. Tires aren’t greased bad enough to dump you unless you are being beligerent.

At least his repairs are simple and cheap.

You should check to make sure your handlebars aren’t bent. When my bike got knocked over the clutch lever AND the handlebar bent.

chopping would cause high though...(from what i’ve seen anyways)

either way, its unfortunate. lessons learned and all that. cheap repairs, and moving on.

Despite all of my bicycle injuries, I haven't done that one yet. I really want a motorcycle but with my tendency to break stuff it might be a terrible idea. Hope you heal up quick. (Also, hope you aren't left handed. Brushing my teeth with the wrong hand when I broke my humerus was ridiculously stupid).

They were already bent on the other side from the bike falling over. I’m just glad I hadn’t already installed the replacement bars.

Right handed thank god. Also really glad it was the left as everything I own has a manual transmission.

Glad you know you know exactly what I did with the throttle and how greasy my tires were despite having never seen me ride, seen my bike, etc.

You sir, are frankly and ass, and are talking out of it.

I avoided the broken collar bone, but pulled of the wonderful combination of a separated shoulder and a torn labrum, which was not so fun.

Oh man. I know that “I’m such a fucking idiot” feels. This too shall pass. There are far more of us in your company than you might think, and for my part, I’m a cautious one and I still have far more of these kind of aggravating occurrences than I care to admit.

Yep, the part where I said I outran my own skill is definitely me denying I’d made a mistake.

Yeah, that’d be a problem. I have an automatic so when I was driving in a sling the hardest thing was turn signals. I couldn’t get the stalk with my left arm, so I had to hold the wheel with my left hand, and then reach though the wheel to hit the turn signal.

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah. This is mostly bothering me because it ties into my biggest worry with riding a bike. The margins for fucking up are smaller than in a car. You can make some really stupid mistakes in a car and get away with it vs what will fuck you up on a bike.

Well, frankly, ride enough and you know the general causes of certain types of crashes. Tires don’t come greased like they used to. Today, “greased/new tires” is frankly a bullshit excuse unless you are riding stupid hard.

I’m sorry you dumped it, but i’m not going to apologize for anything I said.

Indeed on the lesson learned and cheap repairs.

Thinking about it, chopping off could possibly cause a low or high. The way i think of it is:

-> Chop off -> weight shifts to the front -> rear loses grip as a result and washes out

If it fully washes out, you get a low but if it regrips and snaps back then I can definitely see the possibility for a high.

I’m happy to be an asshole, and I’ll admit I dumped my old bike plenty of times because of my own fuck ups.

Either you can take the easy way out and blame your tires or you can learn what you messed up.

Its no different than me blaming my golf clubs for hitting a shitty shot.

Kinja'd!!! Pixel > Biggus Dickus (RevsBro)

Kinja'd!!!0

Did you not see the comment before you first replied saying I’d outrun my skill? I’m not refusing blame here, but you are making all sorts of assumptions about what I did wrong(especially about throttle).

What happened was that in a dry, sand-free parking lot I took a left turn and leaned the bike over hard. No change in throttle/gas/clutch and when I got to a certain point in the lean the the rear tire kicked out and the bike literally fell over smashing my shoulder into the ground. It happened fast enough that I was still on the throttle while the bike was skidding(I recall hearing the engine revving while it was sliding).

Did I fuck up? Clearly, or I wouldn’t be in a sling right now.

Are you armchair quarterbacking an accident you know nothing about and coming off as a blowhard asshole know-it-all? Clearly, and perhaps you should stop before you look like an even bigger douche.

Full sympathies from me to you. I’ve hurt myself dirt riding before (I think most riders have hit the ground at some point) and it’s not fun. And it’s crappy that you’re missing out on “ride time”. I broke my right foot pretty bad the first week of January and missed a bunch of snowboard time, and because it was so warm out, a BUNCH of time I could have been riding my dual sport. I could have been out plenty all Jan and Feb, which is ridiculous for Alberta.

I was just going to spring service my two bikes last weekend but stress fractured my big toe from overcompensating for my healing metatarsals while walking around the shop at work. So now I’ll maybe be back in the saddle next week, but more likely the week after that.

Sometimes life just likes to knock you around a bit. Good on you for sharing, and for owning it.

Yep, I did this last year on the old bike taking a turn at very low speed onto my side street. Luckily I escaped injury but needed a couple new parts on the bike.

Heal fast!

Bummer man... Heal up quick.. And yeah, beware the new, un-scrubbed tire. When I get new tires I immediately go find a gravel road (preferably deep gravel) and get squirrelly in it to scuff them up...

Could have been much worse. At least now you have 3-4 weeks to get the parts together and the bike fixed! Feel better.
